Welsh

Back-formation from gwneuthur, from Middle Welsh gwneuthur, altered from *gwreithur with -n- from gwnio (to sew), from Proto-Celtic *wregeti (compare Cornish gwra (he does, makes), Breton gra (he does, makes), Old Irish fairged (they made)), from Proto-Indo-European *werǵ- (compare English work). Middle Welsh preserved the -r- in the preterite: gwreith (I did, made), goruc (he did, made).
