Old English

From Proto-Germanic *setlą, representing Proto-Indo-European *sedlos, from *sed- (sit). Cognate with Old High German sezzal (German Sessel), Middle Dutch sētel (Dutch zetel), Gothic 𐍃𐌹𐍄𐌻𐍃 (sitls). The Indo-European root is also the source of Ancient Greek ἑλλά (hellá), Latin sella (seat, chair), Russian седло́ (sedló).
